How to Interpret Real-World MPG

Real-world MPG is not a single permanent number. It changes with driving mix, weather, speed, tire pressure, roof racks, cargo, grade, fuel blend, maintenance, and idle time. DOE notes that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage substantially, especially at highway speeds and in stop-and-go traffic. EPA provides CO2 factors for gasoline and diesel, which the calculator uses for a planning emissions estimate.
