How to Use the RPM Calculator

Useful RPM math connects tire circumference, selected gear, final drive, slip, and measured tach/speed data instead of relying on a single ratio.

Quick answer

To calculate engine RPM at road speed, convert mph into wheel RPM using tire circumference, then multiply by the transmission ratio, final drive ratio, transfer case ratio, and slip multiplier. To convert RPM back to mph, reverse the equation: divide engine RPM by overall ratio and slip, then multiply by tire circumference.

Enter the current tire size, such as 255/70R17, or use a manual tire diameter if you have measured rolling diameter. Add the stock tire size when you want speedometer and effective-gear-ratio context after a tire change.

Then enter road speed, tach RPM, selected transmission ratio, final drive ratio, transfer-case or auxiliary ratio, and slip. The result shows RPM at speed, speed at the entered RPM, wheel RPM, speed per 1000 RPM, redline speed, tire revs per mile, and rotational unit conversions.

RPM Formulas

RPM means revolutions per minute. For vehicle-speed math, the wheel travels one tire circumference per wheel revolution. The drivetrain then multiplies wheel speed by the selected gear ratio, axle ratio, and any transfer-case ratio before you compare it with engine RPM.

The constant 1056 appears because there are 63,360 inches in a mile and 60 minutes in an hour. Converting mph into inches per minute gives mph x 1056, then dividing by tire circumference gives wheel RPM.

RPM means revolutions per minute. For a vehicle engine, it describes how many times the crankshaft rotates each minute.

First calculate wheel RPM from vehicle speed and tire circumference. Then multiply wheel RPM by transmission ratio, final drive ratio, transfer-case ratio, and any slip multiplier.

mph = engine RPM x tire circumference in inches / (overall drive ratio x slip multiplier x 1056). Overall drive ratio is transmission ratio x final drive ratio x transfer-case ratio.
