To estimate Tesla charging cost, calculate the battery energy added, divide by one minus charging loss, then multiply billed kWh by the electricity rate. Example: a 75 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% adds 45 kWh. With 10% loss and $0.18/kWh home electricity, billed energy is 50 kWh and the session costs about $9 before fees.

Choose a Tesla planning preset or enter custom battery capacity and measured Wh/mi. The defaults are only starting assumptions; the most accurate values come from your vehicle energy screen, trip history, Tesla app station price, and electric utility bill.

Tesla charging cost has two layers: a single charging session and recurring driving cost. The session depends on state-of-charge change, battery capacity, price per kWh, charging loss, and fees. Monthly cost depends on miles driven, Wh/mi, and where the energy is purchased.

The calculator also estimates MPGe using the EPA energy-equivalent value of 33.7 kWh per gallon of gasoline equivalent. MPGe is useful for efficiency comparison, but cash cost still depends on local electricity rates and gas prices.

Supercharging math should be treated as a station-specific estimate. Tesla states that Supercharger rates and session information are available in the vehicle or Tesla app, and those prices can vary. Use the app price for the site and time you plan to charge.

Home charging vs Supercharging

Home charging is often the lowest-cost option when you can charge overnight at a favorable utility rate. Supercharging can be better for trip speed, apartment living, or unexpected range needs, but it can cost materially more per mile. The monthly mix matters because a driver who charges 90% at home can have a very different fuel budget from a driver who relies mostly on public fast charging.

Charging losses should not be ignored. If the battery stores 45 kWh and the charger is 90% efficient, the utility or station may bill roughly 50 kWh. Cold weather, battery conditioning, charger type, and cable/charger behavior can change the loss assumption.
