Absolute Value Inputs
Enter a number to evaluate, a target for absolute value equations, and a comparison point for number-line distance.
Example: -18, 0, or 7.25.
Used for |x| = target and inequalities.
Used for distance |value - point|.
Value and Distance
| Metric | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute value | |-18| | 18 |
| Distance from zero | distance between -18 and 0 | 18 |
| Opposite value | --18 | 18 |
| Distance between two numbers | |-18 - 5| | 23 |
| Target match | |-18| = 18 | Yes |
Equation and Inequality Forms
| Form | Meaning | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| |x| = 18 | Exact distance from zero | x = -18 or x = 18 |
| |x| < 18 | Inside the interval | -18 < x < 18 |
| |x| <= 18 | Inside or on the endpoints | -18 <= x <= 18 |
| |x| > 18 | Outside the interval | x < -18 or x > 18 |
| |x| >= 18 | Outside or on the endpoints | x <= -18 or x >= 18 |
Math Practice Notice
This calculator is for real-number absolute value practice. It does not graph shifted functions such as |x - h| + k or solve multi-step absolute value equations.

How to Use the Absolute Value Calculator
Enter the value you want to evaluate. Add an equation target if you want solution forms for absolute value equations and inequalities.
Use the comparison point to calculate distance between two numbers with the formula |value - point|.
Step 1: Enter the value
Use a positive number, negative number, decimal, or zero.
Step 2: Set an equation target
The target controls the |x| = a and inequality solution table.
Step 3: Add a comparison point
The calculator finds the absolute difference between the value and this point.
Step 4: Review distance and solutions
Check the absolute value, opposite, target match, and equation forms.
How This Absolute Value Calculator Works
The absolute value of a real number is its distance from zero, so negative inputs become positive while positive inputs and zero stay unchanged.
Distance between two numbers uses the absolute difference formula |a - b|. Subtracting in either order gives the same distance after absolute value is applied.
For solution forms, the calculator uses the number-line meaning of distance from zero. Values inside a target distance form an interval, while values outside a target distance split into two rays.

Absolute Value Rules
| Rule | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Positive input | |x| = x when x >= 0 | The absolute value is the number itself. |
| Negative input | |x| = -x when x < 0 | The negative sign is removed. |
| Zero | |0| = 0 | Zero is zero units from itself. |
| Distance from zero | |x| | Absolute value is a number-line distance. |
| Distance between two numbers | |a - b| | The nonnegative distance between a and b. |
| Equation | |x| = a | Solutions are x = -a and x = a when a is positive. |
Worked Examples
| Expression | Interpretation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| |-18| | distance from -18 to 0 | 18 |
| |7.25| | distance from 7.25 to 0 | 7.25 |
| |14 - (-6)| | |20| | 20 |
| |x| = 9 | x is 9 units from 0 | x = -9 or x = 9 |
| |x| < 5 | inside 5 units of 0 | -5 < x < 5 |
Number-Line Meaning
Absolute value is easiest to read as distance. The numbers -8 and 8 are different locations, but both are 8 units from zero. That is why |-8| and |8| both equal 8.
