Arithmetic Notice
This calculator is for educational arithmetic and exact nonnegative addition. It ignores common formatting marks such as commas and dollar signs, but it does not evaluate formulas or mixed-sign expressions.

How to Use the Long Addition Calculator
Enter one addend per line. You can use whole numbers or decimals, and you may leave commas or dollar signs in pasted values.
Review the aligned work, the exact sum, and the carry table. The carry table reads from right to left, matching the standard paper method for long addition.
Step 1: Enter addends
Type or paste one nonnegative number per line.
Step 2: Check alignment
Decimals are padded and aligned so each place value is added correctly.
Step 3: Read the carries
Use the column table to see each digit sum, incoming carry, written digit, and outgoing carry.
Step 4: Copy the work
Use the copy button when you need to paste the total and aligned addition into notes.
How This Long Addition Calculator Works
Long addition lines up numbers by place value. Ones add to ones, tens add to tens, and decimal places line up by tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.
The calculator converts each addend to the same decimal scale before adding. That keeps decimal results exact and avoids rounding behavior that can happen with floating-point arithmetic.
For each column, the calculator adds the visible digits plus any incoming carry. It writes the ones digit of that column total and carries the remaining tens into the next column.

Core Formulas
| Concept | Formula | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | a + b + c + ... = sum | Combines addends into one total. |
| Column total | digits in a place + carry in | Work from right to left by place value. |
| Write digit | column total mod 10 | Digit written in the current column. |
| Carry out | floor(column total / 10) | Amount carried into the next place value. |
| Decimal addition | align decimal points first | Tenths add to tenths, hundredths to hundredths, and so on. |
Examples
| Problem | Sum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3892 + 746 + 58 + 9031 | 13,727 | Whole-number long addition with carrying. |
| 1249.95 + 86.40 + 713.08 + 42.57 | 2,092.00 | Decimal places are aligned before adding. |
| 987654321987654321 + 123456789123456789 | 1,111,111,111,111,111,110 | Large integers are handled exactly. |
Addition Context
The column method is useful because it breaks a long problem into small place-value sums. Each column uses only the current digits and the carry from the previous column.
For decimal numbers, alignment matters more than visual length. For example, 2.5 and 2.05 are different place-value layouts, so the calculator treats them as 2.50 and 2.05 before adding.
