How to Use This Calculator
Step 1: Choose a shape
Select rectangle, circle, triangle, trapezoid, L-shape, or known area.
Step 2: Enter dimensions
Use consistent units for length-based dimensions or enter a known area with its area unit.
Step 3: Add material allowance
Enter a waste or extra percentage if the result will be used for flooring, tile, panels, or other materials.
Step 4: Enter price per square foot
Use the material or installed cost per square foot when you want an approximate project cost.
Step 5: Review conversions and notes
Check square feet, square meters, square yards, acres, perimeter, formula, and any shape-specific warnings.
How This Calculator Works
The calculator converts your selected dimensions to feet, applies the shape formula, and reports the result in square feet. It then converts that same area into square meters, square yards, and acres.
If you enter a waste percentage, the calculator adds that allowance to the base area to estimate how much material to buy. If you enter a price per square foot, it multiplies the material quantity by that price for a rough cost estimate.
For official real-estate or commercial measurements, standards matter. Appraisal, leasing, and reporting square footage may use rules that differ from simple interior length-times-width geometry.
What You Need to Know
1) Square Footage Formulas
The basic square footage formula is length multiplied by width, but many spaces are not perfect rectangles. For those cases, choose a closer shape or split the layout into smaller sections.
| Shape | Formula | Use case |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle / square | Area = length x width | Rooms, flooring, walls, decks, and simple lots. |
| Circle | Area = pi x radius squared | Round patios, rugs, garden beds, and circular zones. |
| Triangle | Area = base x height / 2 | Angled room sections and triangular patches. |
| Trapezoid | Area = (parallel side A + parallel side B) / 2 x height | Spaces with one pair of parallel sides. |
| L-shape | Area = outer rectangle - cutout rectangle | Rooms or patios with one rectangular notch. |
| Known area | Convert existing area to square feet | Listing, survey, plan, or product-area conversions. |
2) Area Conversions
Square feet, square meters, square yards, and acres all describe area. Conversion is not the same as converting a single length unit because the unit is squared.
| Area unit | To sq m or sq ft | To sq yd | To acres |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 square foot | 0.092903 square meters | 0.111111 square yards | 0.0000229568 acres |
| 1 square meter | 10.7639 square feet | 1.19599 square yards | 0.000247105 acres |
| 1 square yard | 9 square feet | 0.836127 square meters | 0.000206612 acres |
| 1 acre | 43,560 square feet | 4,046.856 square meters | 4,840 square yards |
3) Planning Uses and Limits
| Project | How to measure | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Flooring or tile | Measure usable interior area and add waste for cuts and breakage. | Patterned layouts, diagonals, and small rooms often need more allowance. |
| Painting walls | Wall square footage uses wall length x height, minus openings when precision matters. | This page calculates flat area shapes, not automatic door/window deductions. |
| Home listing area | Official living area can depend on exterior measurements and appraisal rules. | Do not treat a planning estimate as appraisal-ready square footage. |
| Land or lot area | Use geometric area for rough planning only. | Legal lot size requires official surveys, records, and boundary definitions. |
