How to Use the Absolute Change Calculator
Enter the initial value and final value. The calculator subtracts initial from final to find the signed change, then applies absolute value to find the absolute change.
Review the relative change section when you also need percent change or absolute percent change. Percent change is unavailable when the initial value is zero.

A positive result means increase; a negative result means decrease.

Absolute change reports the size of the difference without the sign.
How This Absolute Change Calculator Works
The signed change is calculated as final value minus initial value. This preserves the direction of the movement, so increases are positive and decreases are negative.
The absolute change applies absolute value to that difference. It answers how large the change was, regardless of whether the value moved up or down.
Percent change divides the signed change by the initial value and multiplies by 100. Absolute percent change uses the size of the change instead of the signed change.

Direction Versus Size
Signed change and absolute change answer different questions. Signed change tells you whether the value went up or down. Absolute change tells you how far apart the two values are.
