How Compatible Numbers Work
Compatible numbers are nearby values that make arithmetic easier. For example, 39 x 21 can be estimated as 40 x 20, which is much faster to multiply mentally.
For addition, subtraction, and multiplication, this calculator rounds each number to the selected friendly unit. A unit of 10 makes nearby tens; a unit of 100 makes nearby hundreds.
Division needs a slightly different approach. The calculator first chooses a friendly divisor, then adjusts the dividend to a nearby multiple of that divisor so the quotient is easier to calculate.
