How to Use the Long Subtraction Calculator

Enter the minuend and subtrahend. You can use whole numbers or decimals, and pasted commas or dollar signs are ignored.

Review the aligned subtraction, exact difference, and borrow table. The borrow table reads from right to left, matching the standard paper method.

  1. Step 1: Enter the minuend

This is the value you subtract from.

  2. Step 2: Enter the subtrahend

This is the value being subtracted.

  3. Step 3: Check decimal alignment

Decimals are padded so each place value lines up before subtraction.

  4. Step 4: Read the borrow steps

Use the table to see when a column borrows from the next place value.

How This Long Subtraction Calculator Works

Long subtraction lines up values by place value. Ones subtract from ones, tens from tens, and decimal places line up by tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.

If a top digit is too small, the calculator borrows from the next higher place value. That adds 10 to the current working digit and records a borrow into the next column.

When the original minuend is smaller than the subtrahend, the final answer is negative. The calculator shows the absolute borrow work and then applies the negative sign.

Subtractiona - b = differenceFinds the amount left or the distance between two values.
Inverse relationb + difference = aChecks subtraction by adding the difference back.
Borrowingadd 10 to the current place and borrow 1 from the next placeUsed when the top digit is smaller than the bottom digit.

Negative resulta - b = -(b - a) when b > aShows the absolute borrow work, then applies the sign.

Examples

ProblemDifferenceNotes
9031 - 7468,285Whole-number subtraction with borrowing.
1249.95 - 86.401,163.55Decimal places are aligned before subtracting.
58.25 - 713.08-654.83Absolute borrow work is shown, then the negative sign is applied.

Subtraction Context

Subtraction can be checked with addition. If 9031 - 746 = 8285, then 8285 + 746 should return 9031.

Decimal subtraction uses the same column method as whole-number subtraction once the decimal points are aligned and shorter decimal parts are padded with zeros.

Frequently Asked Questions

Long subtraction is the column method for subtracting by place value. Start at the rightmost digit, borrow from the next place when needed, and write each difference digit.

Yes. It aligns decimal places by padding shorter decimal parts with zeros before showing the column subtraction work.

Borrowing, or regrouping, means taking 1 from the next higher place value and adding 10 to the current digit so the subtraction can be completed.

The calculator returns a negative difference. For the borrow table, it shows the absolute subtraction work in the easier order and then applies the negative sign.

Yes. It uses exact integer-style arithmetic after decimal alignment, so large values are not rounded by floating-point math.

They are treated as formatting characters so pasted values like 1,249.95 or $86.40 work without manual cleanup.
